Plan, organize and direct the administrative and operational activities of the UIHC Department of Rehabilitation Therapies which includes Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Music Therapy, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and Hospital-Based Education (K-12) Services.

  • In collaboration with departmental HR Representative(s) works across multiple clinical functions and with medical, collegiate and hospital leaders to ensure a consistent approach to HR management.
  • Hold unit leaders within a department accountable for high performance and high engagement by articulating expectations, monitoring performance and providing feedback consistently across areas of responsibility. Approve resource allocations and staffing models.
  • Develop strategy for budget priorities for multiple clinical, education and research functions and negotiate among them to address resource issues.
  • Hold unit leaders, clinical division, research, and education leaders accountable for managing budget.
  • Work with internal and external leaders to address and resolve budget issues. Seek methods to enhance revenue.
  • Manage across multiple clinical functions to develop and monitor quality and service indicators.
  • Oversee patient satisfaction and quality indicators. Assure that clinical services, educational programs, and research activities are in compliance with all applicable internal and external requirements.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of departmental operating procedures and existing therapy techniques and recommend organizational changes, policy, and procedure revisions and/or new technology applications.
  • Work across multiple clinical functions and with medical directors to implement best care practices and new models of care/service.
  • Address implementation issues across clinical functions and with other departments.
  • In collaboration with senior hospital leadership and multi-disciplinary stakeholders, develop departmental strategic plan and integrate it with other functions; guide managers in developing action plans for implementation; monitor progress to goal completion.
  • Assure integration of goals across functions.
  • Serve as liaison between staff, medical staff, and healthcare leadership.
  • Engage and collaborate with physicians to identify opportunities for improvement, program development and capital budgeting.
  • Communicate with external agencies and constituencies to address issues and answer questions.
  • Serve as liaison among multiple clinical functions, research, and education units to support collaboration in identifying opportunities for improvement and program development.
  • Serve as the departmental representative to hospital-wide committees and projects.
  • Administer clinical education programs.
  • Actively collaborate and partner with the Carver College of Medicine therapy programs to enhance clinical, research and education opportunities.  Serve as adjunct member of the faculty.
  • Coordinate and direct research activities in the department.
  • Administer multiple research grants and contracts in a variety of disciplines.
  • Compile and disseminate research results through publications and oral presentations.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in in one of the professional disciplines within the department (i.e., physical therapy, occupational therapy)
  • Extensive (8-10 years) managerial/leadership experience in rehabilitation therapy
  • Reasonable (5-7 years) clinical experience in one of the professional disciplines within the department (i.e., physical therapy, occupational therapy) is required, with the ability to demonstrate high degree of understanding and skill in respective area of patient care
  • Eligibility for state licensure to practice Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy in Iowa
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree preferred
  • Experience in financial management, data analysis, clinic management, and leadership
  • Experience with budget management (e.g., regular use of institutional financial reports to manage to monthly and annual targets)
  • Experience training and mentoring students, learners, and trainees
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change
  • Previous experience in an academic medical center or deep understanding and appreciation for the role of the AMC
  • Experience managing in a matrix reporting and unionized environment
