SUMMARY
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Hennepin Healthcare (HCMC) is seeking a highly motivated individual for a full-time opportunity as a Clinical and Forensic Toxicology Laboratory Medical Director.
This role provides medical leadership for the Clinical and Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and additional laboratory sections, depending on expertise. The successful candidate will serve as a liaison and clinical consultant to Hennepin Healthcare Systems medical staff, individual providers and laboratory staff. Collaborates with laboratory administrative director, managers, supervisors, technical staff and other medical directors on issues affecting operations. Partners with Hennepin Healthcare/HCMC in laboratory strategic planning, growth, marketing, and research & development. Provides an environment for continuous laboratory staff development and medical staff, resident and fellowship education. Develops and maintains professional relationships within and external to the institution. Joins the medical staff and faculty within the Hennepin Healthcare/HCMC ComACC accredited Clinical Chemistry Fellowship program.
Eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Minnesota Medical School in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (rank commensurate with experience). Opportunities for research with the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute are available.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides medical leadership for the Clinical and Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and one or more sections of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology
- Serves as medical director of accredited CAP Forensic Urine Drug Testing laboratory
- Meets with managers, supervisors and technical staff to monitor service performance using quality indicators
- Serves as liaison and clinical consultant to Hennepin Healthcare Systems/HCMC medical staff, individual providers and laboratory staff
- Consults on test menus, appropriateness, clinical correlations and interpretations, utilization, and new test development
- Collaborates with laboratory administrative director, managers, supervisors, technical staff and other medical directors on issues affecting operations
- Advises lab administration on personnel and instrumentation/equipment needs
- Partners with Hennepin Healthcare Systems/HCMC in laboratory strategic planning, growth and marketing
Shares decisions with Hennepin Healthcare Systems/HCMC Lab Management regarding test menus, method selection and test validation - Provides an environment for continuous staff development and medical education
- Prepares and presents education information to medical and laboratory staff, including research and development
- Develops and maintains professional relationships within and external to the institution
Requirements
Minimum Education / Work Experience
- PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree. PhD candidates should be board certified or eligible by ABCC (American Board of Clinical Chemistry) and/or American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT). MD candidates should be board certified or eligible in Chemical Pathology or Forensic Toxicology by ABP (American Board of Pathology)
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Significant experience in clinical consultation of test results
- Experience in method development and performance evaluation of instrumentation including automated chemistry, immunoassays, HPLC, GC, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS
- Requires interaction with a diverse patient population
- Versed in research methodologies and grant funding
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets
- Ability to develop applied research protocols and grants
- Knowledge regarding all phases of technical leadership, training, quality assurance/quality control and regulatory compliance associated with both IVD and laboratory-developed testing
Leadership Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Skilled and experienced in directing a full clinical laboratory business unit
- Ability to effectively allocate resources (i.e. budget and personnel)
- Capable of assisting executives in defining organizational goals, critical issues, and strategic plans
- Experience modeling and upholding organizational norms and values, particularly with regards to health and safety
- Exceptional problem solving and critical thinking when addressing organizational issues
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and innovatively while supporting company-wide initiatives
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills with people at all levels
