Description

The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) is the only museum in San Francisco devoted to craft and design. Founded in 2004, MCD showcases designers, makers, and artists through an exciting and distinctive series of craft and design-focused exhibitions and public programs. As a non-collecting institution, the museum actively collaborates with artists, designers, museums, and universities, as well as design venues and practitioners to create inspirational experiences in the world of craft and design for visitors of all ages.

The Development Manager position is an exciting leadership opportunity at the Museum of Craft and Design. This integral position is key to the success of ongoing development and relationship building. Working closely with the Associate Director and Executive Director, the Development Manager oversees and helps build MCD’s development department and membership program including strategy, implementation, donor and member stewardship, and board fundraising. The Development Manager supervises the Development Coordinator to ensure accurate and timely fulfillment of all gift processing, memberships, and acknowledgements.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • In partnership with the Associate Director and Executive Director, sets annual fundraising and membership goals for the department; establishes quarterly goals and benchmarks for success
  • Serves as primary point person for special fundraising events and development related cultivation events including galas and auctions, in partnership with the Associate Director
  • Researches, develops, and implements best strategies in stewardship for new, renewed, and upgraded donor and member gifts including execution of the donor renewal cycle
  • Monitors progress toward revenue goals, providing reports for Board and senior management, maintaining a high level of confidentiality
  • Supervises the membership program, services, benefits, and policies with the Development Coordinator
  • Sets schedule of solicitations and cultivations, including timely delivery of mailings, appeals, creative materials, and messaging with Development Coordinator
  • Supervises the Development Coordinator to ensure accurate and timely fulfillment of all gift processing, memberships, acknowledgements, and ensures that payments are delivered to the Business Director in a timely manner; assists with gift and acknowledgement fulfillment processes when volume of gifts requires it
  • Develops, promotes, and documents best practices and policies associated with member, donor, and prospect management
  • Maintains security, accuracy and integrity of database and patron information, working with Development Coordinator to implement and maintain secure, effective management systems for the department’s paper and electronic records
  • Serves as staff liaison for cultivation events, building positive relationships with board, committee members, and stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain positive, ongoing relationships with donors, members, and partners
  • Additional responsibilities as necessary


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, 3-5 years experience, and proven track record with non-profit development database programs (Blackbaud/Altru experience a plus) and fundraising, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Previous success in a forward-facing role while meeting organizational fundraising goals through diverse funding streams with experience securing individual, foundational, and corporate gifts and donations
  • Provide friendly, donor-centered customer service and represent the museum and our mission in a professional and positive manner
  • Demonstrated organizational and managerial skills and ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines promptly in a fast-paced office
  • Ability to appropriately handle sensitive information and communications with members, donors, and stakeholders with integrity and confidentiality
  • Excellent written and oral communication; possess strong writing, detail editing, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to work within a budget and set project budgets
  • Highly proficient in the use of computers and software applications including database management; willingness and ability to learn new applications
  • Possesses initiative, sound judgment, and excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, and ability to work independently as well as in team environment
